Tail probs...

JonV Mar 23, 2004 11:24 AM

Hi all, I've read previous posts in regard to tail shedding probs, but I still have a little bit more to ask.

My Arg B&W didn't shed his tail last time, which is really weird cuz we have never had a prob. Now, it appears he is going into another shed. A few 1/2" by 1/2" chunks have come off from under his tail, and the skin definitely appears to be double thick.

Also, some longer scales on the bottom of the tail turn into 2 shorter scales as you move up on the tail. Maybe that is not clear, in other words he no longer has uniform bands around his tail. On the top, two short bands turn into one long band as you move under his tail (thus it appears scales UNDER his tail where he scrapes scales off may be growing and others not).

First, besides baths, humidity, olive oil, helping him shed, and lots of fruit is there anything else I should do? If his tail doesn't come off this time should I take him to the vet? Is the 2:1 band change a sign of constriction? Any help would be sincerely appreciated!

As far as the one scales turning into two, I know this is normal for some snakes. I don't know if you have snakes or not. I will check my tegu when I get home, his tail is also in a shed. As far as I know, all reptiles are born with a finite amount of scales, and they don't change. It seems he doesn't shed his tail until at least 1 1/2 weeks after the rest of his body. Don't know if this helps or not... I'll reply back when I get home.

I have had the same problems a couple of month ago with my three years old B&W tegu male. Olive-oil, warm bathes (2 hours !) nothing helped for weeks. I switched than to vaseline instead of olive-oil and replaced my old UV bulb (Osram Ultra Vitalux 300W). After two weeks he start sheding.

My tegu male don't eat vegetables and fruits which might caused that problem. I have no idea what I can do that he will eat fruits. He will not even if he get nothing to eat for weeks! All my other tegus get friuts two times a week..
