How many of you have children?
How and when did you start teaching them about venomous?
What kind of rules do you have at your house?
Have you taught your family what to do in the event of an excape?
I have two boys, 8 and 10. I have been teaching them to identify snakes by sight since they could talk. Native and exotic, venomous and non. Sometimes I think they are better at it then I am.
Both of my kids are allowed to open unlocked cages. They have shown enough maturity and skill to be able to handle our nonvenomous snakes without supervision. Both of them know not to mess with the locked cages. They also know what can happen if they do. I keep a photo of a bite on each cage that contains a venomous snake.
I don't have a hot room. The venomous that I keep are native to this area and have been caught within 2 miles of our home. A simple locked cage is more protection then they get in our yard.
We have a three step plan for excaped animals. Identify the snake. Notify dad, I'm the only venomous handeler in our house, and observe, Watch to see were it goes.
