how much lighting?

aligoonbaba Jun 12, 2003 08:10 AM

I have a 50 gallon tank and it's 4ft long , 1ft wide, and a little more than 1 1/2ft tall. I have a basking area with a 150watt lamp with soem rocks underneath it. I know the temp is at least 105 because thats as high as my thermometer goes, i need to get a better one. I then have a 2ft 20watt reptisun 5.0 uvb. is this enough lighting or should there be more? how much exactly?

thanks

you need to get a digital thermometer and measure the temperature, it could be too high if you are maxing out your temp gauge and cant tell how high it is going. Youll know you have the proper amount of lighting and the right wattage when you get the temps at the correct range. 85 cool side, 105-110 basking (higher for some dragons)

Your doing fine as far as lighting. With those flourescent the dragon has to have a spot where he can go to get cloose to the uvb. Atleast 8 inches from the bulb. With large, deep tanks like the one you got I like useing the mercury vapor light. With these the uvb gets thrown a lot farther almost 3 feet. Makes it easy for the dragon to be in range of the benificial uvb. Other then that it's good. Basking spot 110-115 for babies 105-110 for juvi-adult. Make sure there is a cool side of 75-85 far away from the basking spot. Wal-mart has great digital thermometers for 12 bucks.
