Male rat has "taco neck syndrome"

Thomas S. Mar 23, 2004 08:21 PM

I don't mean to make light of it but the last couple of days my male rat has his head cocked one way or another all the time. I've had this male a little over a month and never noticed anything wrong. Anyone ever see this? He seems to be a good breeder so far. Is this something to worry about? Should I feed him off?

its usually an inner ear thing that makes them loose their balance..

ive seen some who couldnt even stand upright.. but if its just slightly sideways and hes still breeding.. i wouldnt worry about it too much.

Is that something that will go away by itself?

If it is an inner ear infection then it won't goaway by it's self. It shouldnt affect him to bad as long as he can still walk eat drink and mate. It may shorten his life span though. I one time got meds from my vet for a pet rat I had but it really didn't seem to do much. He lived for about 2 1/2 - 3 years old.

I have a female rat that has the same type of syndrome. I call her "crooked head" and she is the sweetest rat I've ever had. She is completely healthy and alert, just keeps her head tilted sideways and is somewhat clumsy at times. She produces some of my biggest and healthiest litters and her temperment and personality are above and beyond all my other rats. I refuse to ever feed her off as I'll just allow her to live out a normal life after she is a retired breeder.

I wouldn't worry about that syndrome. Doesn't really effect them at all from what I can see.

Hope that helps!
