So I'm a little upset with my vet...

chikimonke Mar 23, 2004 09:53 PM

I brought Jak in to the vet today for her second and final deworming shot. However, when the technician brought her back out to me, she told me that there was a "break down in communication" between the person who wieghed Jak and figured out her dosage, and the person who administered the injection. Turns out that they over dosed Jak by about 4 TIMES what she was supposed to get. I know she had recieved Panacur orally two weeks ago, but I am unsure of what the injection was. Does anybody know what the injection might have been, and how dangerous a 4x OD of it could be? The vet told me that Jak SHOULD be ok, but had no garuntees. Jak seems fine right now, other than a little stressed out. I just don't understand how they could have ODed that much. Kinda upsets me. Anyways, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Yeah, they are actually still expecting me to pay for the vet visit and the injection. I don't plan on that happening myself, regardelss of whether or not she's ok in the end. They put her at risk, and that's enough in my eyes, for me not to have to pay the fees. Here's a picture of her, since you are new and I haven't posted a good pic of her in a while =)

You don't HAVE to bring your leo to the vet. I had actually done it because Jak hadn't been eating well and had a runny poop one day. Turns out everything was ok. But as far as you bringing your geckos to the vet, it's probablly a good idea, ESPECIALLY if you got it from a store like Petco or something. They are prone to having pararsites and such. A vet visit will help ensure that your leo is healthy (barring any mishaps from the techs there) however, they can tend to be pricey. The two visits combined, cost me around $150, but that's including the $30 I'm not going to pay, and cab fare home from the vet. So if you can afford it, I'd say go for it.

I haven't gotten used to referring to Jak as a girl. lol She looks beautiful and healthy! I commend you for being so observant about her health.

I think if she has been able to go for awhile without showing any side effects to the overdose, she should be fine. Panacur has a large safety margin. You have every right to be pissed off though. I know I would be.

So it was injected instead of administered orally?

I'd say the leo will be fine, but I TOTALLY wouldn't pay for that. I'd also insist that they do whatever they're doing to your animal right in front of you in the future, I hate it when they go to the back and do mystery things to it. There's no reason the vet couldn't have weighed the leo and measured the meds themselves, it takes like 5 seconds. Meh. Blah. This is stirring up a lot of latent vet anger I have.

Thank you =) As for the Panacur, that was given to her orally, but she was also given an injection of something else with it. I don't think it was the panacur that they injected. But whatever it was, they ODed. Thing is, I was able to go and watch the first time. Then this time they told me to wait in the waiting room. Also, from what I understood, the vet did wiegh her, and figure out the dosage, but the person who administered the injection mis read the number or something, still not entirely sure what happened.

Hi

You shouldn't just not pay the $30. without giving the vet an explanation as to why you aren't paying for that shot.

You should send a letter directly to the vet saying why you aren't going to pay him/her for that specific shot, and ask him/her to send you a letter stating exactly what kind of medication was in that syringe that was injected into your gecko. Also, ask why the vet didn't give it to your gecko himself as you are paying for the price of his services, not the tech's.

Not that you would feel better, but you could also mention that if your gecko dies you believe he/she should be responsible enough to replace the animal. Yes, I know that nothing can truely replace something that you love. You could also mention to the vet that he/she is dealing with a living breathing animal and to make that kind of mistake should be unacceptable to him. He/She should have better checking procedures in place. If a tech has any questions whatsoever on dosage amount, they need to go directly to the vet and inquire as to the correct dosage again.

If you send a letter, keep a copy of it for yourself and you may want to send it registered mail to where he has to sign for it personally, so he can't say he never got your letter.

I hope that your Jak will be fine, and keep us up to date on how he is doing.

Take Care, TLB
