I recently bought a young male basilisk from a pet store after going in repeated and looking at the bewautiful lizard that nobody was buying. After about 2 months I bought him when they had a super sale and marked him $20 off. He's been the best lizard I could own. But the pet store gave me known information about him, how big he'll get what he needs or anything. When I asked what's needed they said a cage about 20 gallons tall. I told them I had a 20 gallon long and they said that was fine, but make sure I had a UV light and a completely closed top. I bought a heat rock and buy him about 2 dozen crickets every week. I did a little research and found out that he is a semi-aquatic lizard and gave him a medium sized bowl of water that he soaks and plays it (it's great fun to watch him) and I want to but him a 40 gallon tall tank because I found out he needs a tall tank. Is that a good size? He's still kinda small and young, he hasn't developed his dorsel fins yet or anything. Is 2 dozen crickets enough? And what can I get to up the temp of his aquarium? because it's no where near 80 degrees. I bought five plants that he climbs up that stick on the wall and he loves them. And he plays in the water a lot. I thought about creating the aquarium into a semi water-semi land awuarium, but no idea how to do that...any sugguestions? I've had green anoles and tree frogs my whole life...so I don't know what to do. Somebody help me pick up on what else I'm missing.

Very short: Throw away th heat rock and read the caresheet I oposted once here.
Basilisks are big extremely agile lizards and a 40, 80 or 100 g tank is way too small for an adult. 400g are about the least. A good size would be 5 x 3 x 6 ft or bigger.
But read (sorry, pics are no longer there)...

He's still a baby, he's only like 6 months, he's still really young. I do plan on gradually developing a large tank for him as he gets bigger. What age is full grown for Male Basilisk? And thanks for the help!

Hi,

somewhat depends on housing conditions.
They can reach 20" in their first year and full length within 15-18 months, but they will not reach full body mass before the end of their 2nd year.

Hope that helps

Ingo
