Killing a rabbit

ReptileGurl08 Mar 23, 2004 10:30 PM

Ive read many posts on "How to kill a rabbit"me..I raise them for show and will never harm a hare on my rabbits...Some ways to kill a rabbit can be painful from what ive read..

My dad had to put down one of my rabbits because he got sick and it was HORRIBLE for me...But how he did it was,he just broke his neck my dad said the rabbit wont even feel it.Other ways is a hammer and hitting them on the head...Or C02...no air bubbles in the vein because I think that whould hurt!or broomstick's or knifes.....

I know snakes have to eat...But some people picked on me saying "I enjoy killing rabbits and seeing them die"Is that true????????I hope it aint!

I personally despise having to kill my rabbits but I am not willing to take the risk of having one of my snakes bitten or scratched open from a panicky rabbit. I currently use the thumping method but I find it really hard for me to do so I am in the process of finding the equipment needed to euthanize them with carbon dioxide. Anyway, I feel I can speak fo rthe vast number of snake keepers when I say that killing any animal, including petential prey items, we receive no pleasure and find it hard to do. Todd

Here Here. Although I find it fascinating to feed live prey, (i find the tracking and hunting methods very interesting) I believe that thumping them is better, and quicker, than watching them get suffocated to death by a constrictor. I know its natures way but, in my Herp room, I think thumping a prey item is much more humane...and BTW, I still hate to do it.

Im glad some of you dont take enjoyment in watching a poor rabbit get killed!I understand snakes have to eat...But killing is way better.Think like this if you were a feeder rabbit and you were thrown into a hungry snakes cage you whould panic!

Rabbits are naturally prey animals I know and can have a heart attack just from seeing a predotor. So I do ask please dont feed live animals it hurts the rabbit and the snake.

It is my LEAST liked part of being a snake keeper/breeder. Even after 30 years of having to kill rats and rabbits for my snakes I am still not "used" to it and it upsets me every time. I feed almost every day too since I have many many snakes. Being an all around animal lover this is very conflicting for me and extremely difficult for me to do. Yet I have to do it. It's funny in a way because I am otherwise a pretty tough guy, but when it comes to killing little animals I am a total wuss. I know that I will never get used to it. I often have to remind myself that these rabbits that I raise for my snakes only have a life because I am creating them for this purpose. It's a justification, sure, but also true. If I didn't raise them for this they would never exist at all and SOME life is better than NO life I'm sure. And just for the record, all of my rabbits and rats have very good lives up to the very end. They are caged, sure, but caged spaciously and are given healthful treats daily.

I was going to avoid this thread since this topic often becomes heated and it is pointless to add to that. So I will not discuss how I kill my rabbits and or rats, but it is quick and painless.

just kidding...i'm with the majority here... i doubt anyone enjoys doing it...but if your in a situation were a big snake needs a meal...bopping the bunny is the most humane thing to do do for the bunny and the snake!

i really hope no one enjoys killing their feeders. I find it hard to kill the mice for my BP, and i dont even like mice. I really dont think i would ever be able to kill a rabbit.
