fingernail polish, paint pens, sharpie marker, etc. just make sure it's non-toxic. Also if it's water based it'll run when you bath them and dye them (obvious but you don't think about it untill it happens LOL)

Like Sean said, nail polish, permanent markers, etc. I have only ever had a problem with nail polish not shedding off correctly and strictly use markers now.
