putting males and females together

JennaLeigh Jun 12, 2003 09:50 AM

If you put a female in the same enclosure with a male will they always mate? Or will they only mate a certain time of year? Because if you just house a female and a male together will they keep mating and mating and you'd keep getting eggs? I'm just curious because I'd like to keep my male in the same enclosure as a female but I wouldn't like to keeping getting more and more geckos when I dont want them ya know...? Thanks

yes they probably would mate..
What are the ages of your 2 leos.. if either one of them are too young then your leo could be damaged by the other.
also i wouldn't recommend keeping just one female with a male. as he would no doubt stress her out causing her to become ill.
feeding may also be an issue as the female may not get the right amount of food due to the male taking it all.
I am in no way saying that keeping males and females together is bad i am just making sure your leos will not be damaged by doing so..
another important factor to consider is the tank size. is it adequate for 2 leos the amount of furnishings?

If you still want to put them together make sure the leos are both of good age and the enclosure is large enough for 2 leos (even better 3) and make sure there are plenty of places your female can hide to get away from the male if needs be..

ask more questions if need be.

Left to their own devices, males and females will usually only mate during mating season, but this can keep a full season's worth of eggs coming, for the greater part of a year.
