CBB paulsoni

AnthonyCaponetto Mar 24, 2004 02:50 PM

I picked up a pair of these at the KC Herp Society Show this weekend for my little brother...at least that's my excuse. I've always been interested in Candoia, but you rarely see CBB specimens, so I've never gotten any, due to the fact that I can't afford to risk bringing any WC animals into my collection.

Well anyway, a breeder at the show this weekend had some CBB paulsoni. They're from breeding a burgundy male and salmon colored female, 3rd generation CBB and feeding on unscented pinkies to boot.

Anyway, here they are. This is the female. There is a dime in some of the photos for size reference.

This is the male...There's a AA battery in the background for size reference.

Oh yeah, So he had babies Sunday. Why, he told me he "never sells his babies till they are a year old to make sure they are healthy and no weird colors are missed MMmmm. After the *&*&*.. he laid on me I wish you luck in getting them eating and thriving I will never believe another word he says. No names will be ever mentioned I'm not that bent on revenge from a big dissapointment I dont think that I would brag it up too much. Not dogging on you Anthony, yes we have emailed about the area shows. I really didnt think I would have anything nice to say to him If I went to your show Sunday. See you at the other area shows.

Wow. I'm not sure I know who you are. I wasn't "bragging it up." I was just happy to have found CBB Candoia. They're not expensive animals and I know he had another female available, so you might want to ask him again if he has any available. They're already about 10" long and he said they're taking unscented live pinkies, so hopefully I won't have any trouble.

Those are excellent close ups. Glad you put the dime in the frame to show how small those babies really are.
Good luck with them!

Anthony,
No offense intended, but there is; and always has been, the misunderstanding that C.B.B. animals are clean. They are the animals I treat with the highest suspect. Alot of people assume that if it's C.B.B. then it must be safe. I treat every single specimen the same...as if it has IBD or Paramyxovirus.

Quarantine for a minimum of 60 days is the least you can do for your already established collection. ONE FULL YEAR(which should be a standard) allows for a full cycle of events in a newly acquired animals introduction...introduction to both the animal and it's new habitat, and to the animal's behaviors(signs) and the new owner. Just because it is Captive Born and Bred does not mean anything to an already established community.

Expo after Expo...Sterilite/Rubbermaid after Sterilite/Rubbermaid...can you be entirely sure just what table it was next to, in whatever State, was safe and sound? The answer is very simple.

I know alot of people that readily introduce, without any quarantine, animals that are C.B.B. to their already established breeding groups; simply because they are Captive Born...what's all the hubbub about?

Not really directed at Anthony, but rather anyone else that is reading this...heh heh...Anthony should know better by now...heh heh...

Just food for thought,
Devil's Advoc.....I mean, Scott

The shortest quarantine I use is 3 months/90 days, but more typically 6 months to a year before being introduced into the same room as the rest of my collection. FWIW, the only sick Candoia I've gotten was CBB - both my WC animals were healthy as they could be when I got them (though the male was a nightmare to get feeding). Though I'll name no names, there's a dealer at one of the shows I go to that I had 110% confidence in...until I spoke with a friend who's another vendor that knows him personally. He always has very healthy looking animals, but from what I understand doesn't practice good quarantine methods. He purchases surplus animals from other breeders and dealers as well as fresh imports and they all go into the stock he sells. There's really no way of knowing what an animal you purchase from him has been exposed to. To be fair, I've never had a single problem with aniamls I got from him...but that bit of information changed the amount of quarantine animals from him go through from 90 days to a full year. It also changed how I viewed vendors & dealers as a whole...I dare say most if not all of them have the same general practices...and all new animals in my collection are now put through a year's quarantine just to play it safe.

I know, I know...preaching to the choir. lol But as Scott said, it's food for thought for those new people reading these threads.

Scott,

Thanks for your concern, but they're most certainly US CBB. In fact, so were their parents. They came from a breeder that has been doing our (KC Herp Society) Spring and Fall Breeder's Expo for the last several years. Our show is CLEAN and it is (without exception) 100% CBB only. That rule is strictly enforced. I know this because I'm on the Board of Directors and I'm one of the people that helps to enforce that rule. If you don't believe that, just ask the last guy who tried bringing farmed "CB" Chondros to our show. They were removed from his table with the first 20 minutes of our last show.

These animals were represented as 3rd generation CBB and feeding on live, unscented pinkies and I have no reason to not believe that they were properly represented. In fact, they both took thawed pinky mice the other night and are doing just fine.

My collection is small (60 animals or so), but I do quarantine new arrivals. The point of buying CBB only is that I am not knowingly bringing a problem into my collection.

Thanks,
Anthony Caponetto

Congrats on the new additions. They are real beauties...and feeding unscented pinks to boot! Good deal. I'm finally starting to see a few more CBB babies at shows myself, not many, but some. As more people start to keep and breed them, I dare say we'll see them become more available and possibly even more main stream (I can dream at least!). One of the many nice things about them is how small they stay, even as adults, a perfect size for a pet. My yearling Santa Isabel is only about 10 inches long...gonna be a while before she's breeding size. lol

Very nice! I'm starting to like the darker colored SIBs as much as the light ones. The variation never ceases to amaze me. Congrats on your purchase!
