Foods for chameleons

Chameleo19 Mar 24, 2004 03:30 PM

I used to breed panther chameleons 6-8 years ago I am going to be getting back into it. Since I left the hobby much has changed and I am reading many condradictory things. I used to use meal worms crickets and waz worms for a varied diet now they have these silk worms and horn worms. I have read on some sites that silk worms and horn worms can be fatal to a chameleon if used as a food source. Is there any truth to this and what food items do all of you use and suggest. Also if you have any links to sites you know have healthy insect that I can order for my chameleons. thx any info is greatly appreciated.

The previous post reguarding the silkworms is true, they are
not toxic and are a good food source for the chameleons at any
age. They contain higher amounts of calcium than crickets.
Field collected insects such as grasshoppers and Katydids are
a natural and excellent food for chameleons. As you probably already know, stay away for agricultural areas when collecting.
The handbook; " Thoughts For Food" is a very good publication
that was put out by the CIN, Chameleon Information Network.
Although that org. no longer exsists, you can still order
the handbook for $14.95. If you can't get it, let me know and
I can e-mail you the ordering info.

Not sure where you read about silkies and hornworms being fatal for chams. Many people use silkies as a staple with the crix as a more ocassional meal. Anyway, here are some good sites. Cham News has LOADS of articles written by some of the tops in the field. Be sure to browse their back issues.

ALL of these have info on breeding, husbandry, baby/nursery info, nutrition, species, feeders, health, vets and MUCH more:
