I OWN A DWARF DAY GECKO: DOES ANYONE ELSE? I'D LIKE TO KNOW.

caecilianman02 Mar 24, 2004 03:53 PM

Hi there:
I got it for free (is that a good deal or what?) or else it would most likely be killed. I've had it for a very long time. It lives in a spacious vivarium with other herptiles, but not another day gecko of this species (I cannot find one.) It bred succesfully with a female gecko on many ocassions before I acquired it. Does anyone else keep them? I guess the giant, more common species are the type most commonly kept.

Exactly what species are you talking about. A scientific name could get you much further. I will look for your reply, because I can most likey find them for you.

Most day geckos are "dwarf" (better term would be small). There are dwarf day geckos that are REALLY small but I doubt that you have that. If it is green, has red spots, blue around the eyes, and gold specs on its body it is a gold dust day gecko and is fairly common species of the bunch. You can readily find those online if no petshops nearby have them.

Hi there:

This species is not very colorful. It has no blue or red. I know my geckos, and it definately isn't a gold dust day gecko. It's stomach is gold, and it has black blotches below its arms. The gecko measures about 3 inches in length. I was told it was a dwarf peacock day gecko, but the coloration is far too dull. I have only seen one other of these for sale, and the price was outrageously high. It is also more skittish than the other geckos I have kept. I hope this helps.

Does it also have small black patches just in front of its hind legs, visible when the leg is pulled back?
If so, it HAS to be a peacock day gecko, blue and red or no blue and red.

I haven't been able to find any species that has the black spots you mentioned, aside from quadriocellata. A photo would be VERY helpful.
A lot of factors can affect individual coloration, but those markings sound pretty distinctive.

Hi there:

It does have those black patches you describes. Its arms and legs are gold, and there is a thin deep red line running down his back. It must be a dwarf peacock day gecko then, hugh? I like that little guy. I was going to name him Dexter at first, but ended up naming him Gecster. Ha! Although I don't keep any (but some of my friends do) my favorite species of day gecko is the neon day gecko. Aren't those little guys awesome? Nonetheless, I love this species a lot!
