New Baby Herman Tortoise

Becki71 Mar 24, 2004 07:04 PM

Well we got our newest addition to the family today! We are so excited. She is three months old and looks almost exactly like our other little Herman. We are calling them Sam and Ella. My husbands idea....I think it is kind of funny. I will try and send some pics soon.

I'm probably being paranoid but I soaked her right after I got her and I don't think she drank any water. I tried soaking her a little later on in the day thinking she just needed to relax and warm up after her trip but she still didn't seem to want to drink. She has eaten a little though. Should I worry? I'm sure by tomorrow she will drink right? She is now curled up under some timothy hay sleeping....I'm sure she is just tired and stressed from that intense trip here. I've been keeping the kids away from her...I know she needs to be left alone to get used to her new place. Any reasurance would be greatly appreciated!

Shipping really seems to stress a tortoise out in general. As a rule they usually don't eat for a few days and I've never really noticed the weater intake. Just give it a few days to settle in. Keep the little guy/gal warm and continue the soakings. I'd suggest offering food on a regular basis but don't be disappointed if it is not consumed. Give it a week before you start to worry.
