Good Rattlesnake areas around Savannah, Georgia?

jgsavGA Mar 24, 2004 07:33 PM

I've been living in Savannah for over a year and throughout this period I've only found one Canebrake rattler, but lots of Cottonmouths. Since I'm not from Georgia or South Carolina I am not familiar with good spots to go looking for Diamondbacks, Canebrakes, Pygmy's, and such. Does anyone out there know of some good spots to find these snakes. I am a naturalist and herpetologist and look for snakes for the pure enjoyment. No intent whatsoever of catching them or killing them. And while I'm at it, any spots for colubrids such as kings, and corns? Thanks.

I don't know of any good sites. I am looking for an eastern diamondback. I plan on going to Savannah, probably around one of the barrier islands, this weekend to look around. If I get lucky I'll let you know.

Go out to one of the less inhabited barrier islands. Look on the secondary dunes in the heavier vegetative cover. Walk slowly and listen. Also look for small animal trails at the edges of the marsh - just above the high tide line (where vegetation switches from spartina to juncus and batis(?)).

Islands like Ossabaw, Wassaw, Sapelo and Cumberland are really neat places and there tends to be some gorgeous beach when you get tired of searching for snakes.

We just found one diamondback in the Okefenokee area, and to the west of the state, I can't remember the area, we found 5 timbers. The whole spring break we found about 25 species of herps, pretty productive.
