Thinking of getting an AFT

Raecroft Mar 24, 2004 07:41 PM

Hi, I've cared for corns for 4 years and recently (as of a month and a half ago) a juvie veiled cham. I'm thinking of getting a gecko and the AFT caught my eye and I have a few Q's.
1. Do they like /tolerate being held?
2. How much space do they need?
3. What is the most active gecko?
4. Can you point me to any good caresheets.
5. ANy good online breeders?

THe only think I'm really not intrested in are Leo's.

The most active gecko in my opinion would be the crocodile gecko.

A AFT can be kept in 10 gallon cage and is the most friendly lizard you can get. They are very easy to care for.

AFT's are perfect beginners geckoes, also are the Moorish and Leopard. Fat Tails can tolerate handling but not much or else they"ll get stressed way too much. They eat about 6-8 large crickets and juvie stage but I dont know how many at Adult stage. I keep my male and female in a ten gallon tank. They can be kept in a 10 gallon tank with some bed a beast, decorations
slates if wanted, and a hiding place or multiple I use Exoterra's Rock domish type that holds both geckoes at the same time. By the way they're very nocturnal. Im breeding my AFT's but by the time I have babies AFT's you must already have bought one or two. Good luck if you get one and try going to Anapsid.org or Petco.com to get a caresheet. They have a listing of supplies and also further reading if you're very interested in AFT's. Gl hf with them.

Aft's are very docile. Mine will sit in my hand for long periods with no problems. They also appear to like petting, they arch their back when you pet them. Most are not very active. They can move qwik when they want but most the time move slowly. They hide alot during the day and come out and hunt at night. Care is very simular to a Leo except they require more humidity. A single AFT can live in a 10 gal.

Dude did you buy that creamy peach aft or did you breed it? If I have two normal coloratio AFT's what are the chances of having a color like that? If you did breed that way how did you do it?

Dakman Mar 25, 2004 09:48 PM

Thats a male Amel(albino) AFT. You won't get one by breeding two normals. The normal female next to him was hatched by me and will help produce Amel hets this year so I can produce 100% amels next year. He was spendy and as far as I'm concerned, worth every penny. Hes so much more colorful in person(orange).

One last Q, do they require any UVA/UVB lighting? OH and you gave me lots of good info on them but can I see some breeder sites? THanks fora ll the help guys.

Dakman Mar 27, 2004 02:50 AM

They don't require special lighting. They do need a day/night cycle though like they would have in the wild. This can be accomplished by them being in a room with a window that emits enough light thru it or with any kind of bulb set up on a timer to go on and off according to the time of year. The calcium you dust your feeders with should have D3 in it, calcium D3, nocturnal geckos use D3 to help absorb calcium into their system instead of using sunlight. Because they hide during the day and only come out at night special lighting is not neccesary but can be used if youd like. Just be sure the calcium you use is supplemented with D3.
