a large cage for my Burmese X Rock python. I want it to be 8x3x2 (LWH). These are the requirements in mind:

1)Waterproof inside that wont warp/bubble, possibly a thin hard plastic to line the inside
2)Lightweight construction (relatively speaking)
3)Ability to be disassembled and reassembled for future use
4)Moderate to low amount of ventilation as to retain high humidity levels
5)Sliding glass doors

Has anyone designed or constructed anything similar to what Im invisioning? Or can someone post pics of their large home made cage? Thanks in advance

You can check the link im my sig for some ideas.

But i suggest going to Home Depot and purchasing oen of their premade cabinet units and converting it. Or convert an old dresser you already have.

for a cage that size to be made of wood it is going to be difficult to be both waterproof as well as lightweight and easily disasembled. depending on how cosmeticly appealing you want it i would say just frame it out in 2x2s and use plywood or melamane for the walls. if you use melamene and silicone the insides it should be waterproof enough. as for being lightweight and easily disasembled, id say put some casters on the bottom or better yet on the back because it will only be 2ft tall and that should fit through most doorways.

Here is a pic of the 7x2x2 poplar wood cages I’ve been working on this winter. The entire inside is going to be Plexiglas lined and welded. The front access doors will be ¼ inch Plexiglas on hinges to fold out. The center divider will have a 4” hole sleeved with pvc pipe cut flush and welded to the inside Plexiglas to allow the snake full access to the cage. This will also allow me access to half the cage at a time for maintenance without disturbing the reptile to much. Almost all of my materials are from Home Depot. These cages are huge but still somewhat easy to maneuver.
I have $275.00 invested on three large cages so far.

These cages cannot be disassembled and take up half my snake room. My large snakes will enjoy the extra room. I just took my time and looked at many different designs before I committed. Most of my ideas came from reading this form and the ideas of the dedicated herpers on it.

The cabinet idea posted earlier sounds good. Almost did that myself.

Good Luck….Dann
