breeding crickets ir other green tree frog food

stunt101 Mar 24, 2004 09:33 PM

i just went out today and bought 24 pinhead crickets and 2 green tree frogs for the 20 gallon high tank. i just wanted some tips on raising crickets. i have a large tubberware containers
2'x 2'x 1' 1/2". i place 2 crickets in the cage for the frogs to eat and the rest went into the breeder box. in there i have a little box of damp soil, many pine cones, egg crate, water dish and a food dish. i was just wondering if the pinhead crickets had to grow more to be able to breed.
i just wanted some tips on....
-how big they have to be to be able to breed,
-how many more will i need to buy in order to feed my 2 frogs for this month and start a colony.
-how long will it take till the eggs are planted and hatch
-how long do the crickets have to grow till they are the right size to breed.
thanx

Crix have to be adult to breed. So you will be in for a wait for them. I would get a 50-100 adult (large) crix. Put them in and keep it damp. Don't know why or what the pine cones may do but hey. You will have more of a wait before pinheads show up. I am thinking that with Green Tree Frogs you could be feeding smalls up to mediums soon. So even more wait.
What I do for crickets for our one Red Eyed Tree Frog and, well okay the Pyxies eat anything and don't need crix anymore....they eat roaches mostly and pinkies. But for one or two frogs I would buy in 500-1000 at a time. Get a size down from the max you want to feed and keep them. I have to admit I can 'bulk' order with some friends so shipping from Reptilefood.com isn't bad. Usually ends up like $15/1000 or less when I buy 5000 mealies.
