Bearded dragon acting strange....need some advice

chaos003 Mar 24, 2004 11:26 PM

Hi,i have a baby bearded dragon(6" and i have had him for about a month now and he has been doing great eating dusted crickets and the occasional mealworms.I have his cage at 80-85 degrees and his basking temp is 110 degrees.Anyways...last week i brought home a blackthroat monitor which is considerably larger than him and he has been acting very strange. At first I had his cage right next to the monitors cage(stupid on my part) but i realized that was a mistake so i moved him across the room from him but he is still acting very weird. He is hardly eating,he is always very dark. And just today i reached in to pick him up and he attempted to bite me and he hasnt let me touch him all day(puffing up and gaping).I need some help.I love this little guy and i just want him to get better. What should i do?Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks alot
Cj

You have a dragon, freaked out. They have very good eye sight, and can see out of a glass cage across the room. I know this since I have males on one side of a room and females on the other. Also he was freaked out thinking he was going to be lunch for awhile with no way to escape, that will take some time to recover from. I tape paper on the outside of cages when I do not want them to see each other , such as when they are right next to each other. Also wash very well when you handel one than go to handel the other. I do not know if they can smell each other but why take the chance. If you can use separate rooms that would be ideal, and remember the monitor thinks beardies are lunch.

I agree with what shasha said. At this point when you reach for him, he probably does think he will be taken closer to something that is his natural predator and is lunch.

Spooked or stress dragons may take a few weeks to recover, even when the threat is removed, you'll just have to have a lot of patience with him. Maybe some relax time just prior to light out with him wrapped in a towel or blanket, his head out so he can see you, but still feel protected and talk to him calmly.
