I adopted a spiny-tailed iggy today(long)

Sam-N-Ella Mar 24, 2004 11:33 PM

WOW!!! This guy is pretty cool. They thought he was a she, but if sexing them is the same as green igs then it's definately a male. It has the large femoral pores and the waxy substance coming out of them. He is a little under weight, but very thick. He has a really good temperment too, which really surprised me. He struggles a little when I'm trying to take him out of the enclosure, but once he is out he calms down pretty quick and is real mellow. He doesn't mind being handled or touched. He is even really active and always tasting and checking everything out. When I first held him we walked around Petsmart and he was just fine for over an hour. He has already eaten(a lot) and gone potty on the couch. So, it seems he's making himself right at home. I hope this is how he is going to be because I was worried that his temperment would be bad. I'm going to have to build a bigger enclosure, but for now it's not too bad. I'll post pics as soon as I upload them. If anyone has any info. on these igs please send it my way. I've posted in the other forum like Shelley7950 recommended and that's where there is more info on these guys. Thanks

Here is a pic of our new addition to the family

Sam-N-Ella Mar 25, 2004 12:23 AM

he is already eating, which really surprised me. It took force feeding and over a week for my green iggys to eat.

here is a pic of him in his new basking spot.

What you have there is a Cyclura Iguana...looks like a Cuban (Cyclura nubila)!! You are one lucky person!! Cyclura make wonderful pets with proper handling. They can become more like dogs than Iguanas. Treat him the same as your Greens altho they can tolerate a wider range of temps, a little less humidity, and they are mostly terrestrial. They are extremely intelligent and will potty train quite easily. Cubans can grow to about 4 feet but can get massively heavy as adults. You can find more info at the link included below. How old is he, do you know?
These are my two young Cubans.

That looks to be a Cuban Rock Iguana or a Camenensis Hybrid.

Awesome Ig.

Enjoy.

Oh how cool. I was really surprised at how mellow and easy going he is. Are yours (in the picture)cubans? Or are they the same as What I have? How much animal protien does he need? I will check out the website. Thanks for your help and info.

Those are great pics.... absolutely gorgeous young cubans... Their eyes give off a lot of intelligence! Ive been looking to adopt an adult cuban for sometime now. After a while I realized it is much easier to find a Green Ig up for adoption. I have filled out far too many adoption forms to no avail. Ive tried to find other adoption societies but none that has as many as the greenigsociety. Ive filled out about 5 adoption papers looking to adopt an ig.

Can any one help me find a healthy adult ig up for adoption in the Illinois area?

Sam-N-Ella Mar 25, 2004 07:03 PM

I was really lucky how I got mine yesterday. Someone called me and said there was a paper with "free iguana to a good home", posted at petsmart. They said that they have been trying to find a home for a while and hadn't had any luck. There was no way I was going home with out it. It was so calm and content with me holding it for over an hour it amazed me. I am finding out by what everyone has posted that I am really lucky and that I should have a lot of good moments with this guy. I look forward to all of them. I hope you can find one for yourself.

Well, our rescue is located in Michigan and we have 29 Green Iguanas right now. I don't have any Cyclura iguanas for adoption...I've only ever seen one in a rescue situation. Babies are available for sale tho...check the classifieds.
We will be in Chicago the first weekend in April for the Chicago Herp Society's Reptile Fest. I will have a couple of our Green kids there and a good number of my Cyclura will be on display. For more information check out the CHS's website. Animals that we have available for adoption can be see at the link included below.

I would love to come out and see all of your iguanas up for adoption! Michigan is kindda far but depends where you are located... How long of a drive do you think it would be from Champaign-Urbana, IL?

Im also interested in one of your pythons! Beautiful creatures!

jiffypop Mar 25, 2004 07:23 PM

I believe that the lizard that you adopted is a Cuban, or possibly a Caymanensis hybridized with Cuban. They are amazingly smart creatures and, as adults, seem to enjoy human companionship. NO animal protein!!! Feed them the same as you do your Green Iguanas. You can add a little grain to his diet, such as wild rice, plain cooked pasta, and whole wheat bread. This is a photo of my 8 year old Cuban female, Doonie, whom I lost last year to egg peritonitis. I was heartbroken when she died. She would spend hours chasing grapes on the floor!! I miss her terribly.

Sam-N-Ella Mar 25, 2004 08:07 PM

I'm sorry to hear about Doonie. That pic. almost looks identical to my guy. He probably is a Cuban. That's funny that you said she liked to chase grapes. I was rolling a little ball across the floor to get our kitten to follow it so he would leave the ig alone. Next thing I know the iggy is chasing it and trying to eat it. I got it away from him and he wasn't able to get it in his mouth, but I couldn't believe he chased the ball. I have a kitten that actually plays fetch, and now an iggy that will chase a ball. How funny. The people who had it fed it a mouse and I read that they need some kind of meat still as an adult. I would never feed it a mouse or anything, and I'll take your advice. That will be a little easier too, not having to make special meals for him. What kind of vitamin supplements do you recommend? Do they like to dig or burrow? Would he like a pool of water? Thanks for your help.
