It's great for UVB, but is NOT a heat source. You'll need a different bulb for that. I recommend the Halogen floodlights you can get at Walmart or Home Depot.

I'm going to need to add some heat for summer (AC running). Do these halogen bulbs screw into ceramic lamps? What size/wattage is recommended for a 40 breeder?

Most that I have used fit into the ceramic fixtures. You can get good basking temps with the 45 or 50 watt bulbs(depens on the brand) by either lowering the bulb or raising the basking spot. If you don't have the means to do that, you might have to try diferent watt bulbs until you get a good temp.
good luck

The PowerSun is a mercury vapor bulb, which produces a huge amount of heat and UVB. The ReptiSun 5.0 is a flourescent tube bulb that makes no heat. Sounds like you are mixing the two up.

agreed. I have a Powersun MVB and normally temps are great.

We keep a pretty cool house in the summer, though, so I'm sure I will need the additional heat source.
