Cuttle bone/mineral blocks?

nebit Feb 10, 2003 12:35 AM

Hi guys,
first, just thought I'd let you know that i bought the Mikester some fake plants from walmart the other day and he is enjoying them immensly. He's reduced his time in his hide box and now frequently hides under a hanging patch of fake ivy in the corner, or lays on top of the small ground ivy(also fake) that I placed for him. My new question is this... i've recently started reading about providing turtles with cuttlebones or similar devices to trim their beaks and, I assume, up their calcium intake. Does this work? What is the best and or safest way to offer it? Will he really choose to chew on such a thing if i place it in his enclosure? Lookin for opinions, thanks guys. -Neb

Cuttlebone is the best... you can find it where you get bird supplies, and sometimes it is sold in bulk.

It helps if you peel off the very hard backing, and leave the softer main part. Your turtle will nibble on this when he craves calcium. Sometimes it takes them awhile to figure it out, that or the weathered cuttlebone tastes better!
