Yellowfoot aggression

Passport Mar 25, 2004 08:47 AM

I have been so fortunate to have added to my collection a producing pair of Yellowfoot Tortoises. I already had a 9-10inch female?. The adult male is showing a lot of aggression toward my much smaller girl?. I've seen breeding behavior in other torts but I've not seen such brutal ramming as I've seen against my smaller tortoise. Could she be a he? The plastron is flat. The rear scutes are small. Her body shape is round. I purchased her a year ago and was also told she was female. Does brutal, ramming behavior speak of breeding or murder? Of course, they are separated but wanted opinions. Does anyone ever do a DNA for sex determination on their torts or should this behavior be obvious enough for the experienced keeper. Thanks.

Sometime the males will ram the females and bite at their legs prior to attempting to mount them. As far as he being a she. I have a yellowfoot that is around 10 to 11 inches and his plastron is flat as board. HE is most certainly a he. Constantly mounting my other torts and his penis has flash many times. No mistake about it.
