Red-eyes and supplements

drthsideous Mar 25, 2004 11:46 AM

How often do you guys dust your crickets for your red-eyes? I had one of my red-eyes die one day and from what i saw he was in perfectly good health. Now i read on some website on white's tree frogs that you can oversupplement them with calcium and give them kidney renal failure. At the point when that redeye died I was dusting the crickets every day with minerals and calcium plus the crickets had calcium fortified cricket quencher. Since than I have been only dusting twice a week. Could too much calcium have done it to the redeye like it does to white tree frogs? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

If your frog died from renal failure, you would know it. Common symptoms include severe bloating/edema, lethargy, etc. There are supplements that are formulated to be used everyday, such as T-Rex's Tree Frog dust, but in general adult frogs dont need calcium dusted prey everyday, esp. if you are adequately gut loading the crickets before feeding.

I dust crickets for my White's once a week, but for my baby RETF's, I do it every day. In addition, I gut load them. I've read many many books & websites & this is how most people seem to be doing it.
