When will they come out?

utpike Mar 25, 2004 01:59 PM

I live right by lake erie and was wondering when water snakes will generally come out? It's been real cold here lately, still in the 30's and 20's at night but this week the weather finally broke it's been 50-60's all week, with no change predicted in temps for next week. I'm just curious, how many weeks of good weather will it take for them to come out of hibernation?

I normally find them in 50 and 60 degree weather, so if your temps stay steady, it probably shouldn't be too long. After all, it's spriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing! The herping will start soon.

I watch for the first appearance of frogs and turtles basking. That usually means the snakes will be out soon. I've also noticed here (in OK) that water snakes often take a while longer than many other snake species to emerge in the spring. Garters, ribbons, rat snakes, green snakes, etc often make appearances weeks before I see my first Nerodia.
