New Tegu owner, worries

Katt Mar 25, 2004 04:11 PM

I have just gotten a cute baby red tegu. I have had him for about two days now. He doesn't seem to move much, or be interested in eating. He just buries himself in his substrate and hides away. I am in Canada, and we're just starting our spring. Could he just be brumating, and will "wake up" in a few weeks time? What sort of foods would entice him, aside from crickets, as they give me horrible headaches. I'm trying pinkies, mealies, and a ground beef mix with Herptivite, calcium power, baby food (fruit veggie).

Any advice for a newbie owner would be great. Thank you.

I would think its the recent end to hibernation. Mine happened to wake up in Feb, so he's all over the place, but it was a few weeks before he really woke up fully. I know alot of people's tegus are just now waking up, so you should be fine.

Thanks a lot!

The previous owner had him since November and he has't grown a bit nor eaten much. Guess he's been brumating all this time.

Did the previous owner allow him to hibernate and/or give enough substrate to do so? If he wasn't eating or growing, then he should have been in the burrow. I see you have enough substrate since he stays buried alot, right? If for some reason the previous owner did NOT allow hibernation, you may want to think about seeing the vet because I imagine that would be VERY stressful.
