Crusty eyes during long basking sessions (long)

dan25 Mar 25, 2004 07:05 PM

Well I will first say that I adopted this little guy/gal (Chester) from my sister that was keeping him in a little Rubbermaid container up at college (not exactly the “perfect” environment). I believe she purchased Chester somewhere in New York City and I don’t think it’s what you would call legal (about 1.5” across). In any event, legal or not it’s my responsibility now and I’m doing my best here to make Chester’s life a little better. Anyway on to the question. I recreantly noticed that after Chester has been basking for long periods of time, its eyes seem to get little crusties in the corners and its hard for him to open them (can take a few minutes for him to get them open). Sometimes it seems he cant get them open until he jumps in the water (once he finds it). I don’t know if this is a big deal or not but its got me worried, doesn’t seem right. My set up consists of a Fluval 404 filter, Repti Glo 8.0 15 watt 18” uv bulb (8% UVB, 33% UVA), 60 watt ceramic heat emitter (keeps the basking spot at about 90 to 85), and a simple aquarium water heater that keeps the water around 70. As far as food hes only really eating ReptoMin baby floating food sticks (he’s a bit of a fussy eater). Any help on what might be going on here would be much appreciated or maybe Im just being an overly cautious new dad. In either case please let me know. Thanks again.

Mine do that too sometimes. it seems like they get little crustys in the corner of their eyes, and mine rub their eyes sometimes to get them open. i just took this to be normal, but now i'm not sure!
