Snow Genetics

zackshawna Jun 12, 2003 12:40 PM

If you mate 2 snows will you get snows or normals? I have a snow and mated her to my Albino and I only got 1 snow out of 14 eggs so far, is this normal? All the rest are normal baby's.

Leopard gecko genetics are very interesting with modern breeding, because we interbreed and do various other unnatural techniques to yield odd and unusual patterns. The result is a stew of genetic traits that vary in terms of probability. If two white people have a child, odds are it will be white. But, if two snow geckos mate, not all of their babies will be snows. I know of people who mated two rare morphs, and all of the offspring were normal.

traits like snow and tangerine are called Complex Inheritance for a reason. It is a very complex mesh of genetic muck that causes the different traits to express.

It is so complex that if two tangerines that are not from the same line are bred together they may NEVER produce a very nice looking tangerine baby. The genetic code that is contained in each parent is just not compatible with each other and does not produce the desired result.

This is also why when two "normals" are bred together you can wind up with some rudimentary traits that are not evident in either parent.
