Are you sure nothing is wrong with her????

skmcwilliams Mar 25, 2004 08:29 PM

I asked this a couple of days ago but had a pretty icky pic and a couple people emailed me for better pics so here they are.I got these two blizzards in from a guy who does snakes and doesn't know much about leo's. He actually got these two in as a trade. I do know they are both blizzards but one came in black. I thought she was dead at first because she was so black but now it's been a week and she is eating and pooping and acting normal but she is staying black. I know blizzads can get dark but she is beyond anything I've seen. I guess I'm still worried about her does anyone else's blizzards turn black.

There is nothing wrong with her. Many blizzards, more often than not, are very dark if not a black. You generally find darker leos more than you see white ones. Don't worry, it's normal!

It's possible that could be a leucistic/patternless. I have never seen a blizzard so dark.. I have a couple and 1 is pretty dark but doesnt hold a candle to that dark one you have.. Wanna sell it hehehe il take both off your hands no problem. Nice to see some new gecko's being posted.

well, My blizzards sometimes get dark if they are stressed or cold but never that dark. If it was light before I would say make sure it is comfy and well fed. Blizzards actually have melinin (spelling?) in their skin cells it usually just lays deep so they look white. When they stress or such it allows it to come near the surface more makeing them dark. I would not really worry just let it relax and get used to its enviorment.

I emailed the guy today about her and he said that he had her for several moths before I bought them and he said she stayed black for him the whole time but he didn't think she was stressed and was gaining weight so he just didn't worry about it.

If she has always been that way could be a new deal. She looks almost melanistic. A few people have been trying to make a black melanistic leo. She may be a money winner if she produces black babies. Blizzards from what I know were a freak of nature that happened to be retained and bred. From what I see also they are getting darker. I believe it is from breeding blizz to normals to get hets. In the process the normals used to produce hets are carring a darker genes in the dna makeing the blizz loose its vibrance that alot of them had in the begining. Sounds like you may have a cool leo there. You may breed her and if she produces any black males breed them back to her or breed a male son back if none show up it may come out in their children. Good luck

Wow, that would be cool if she is something special. I am going to let her get established and gain some more weight before I even think of breeding her, but what would be the best choice for a boyfriend for her to possibly make black babies, another blizzard male?

RiverRatt Mar 25, 2004 10:32 PM

yep, I would use another blizz. If it is something that comes out it may have something to do with the blizz gene. If none of her babies come out black then breed a male offspring back to her as it may be a recessive gene. Never know you could get lucky . I have a nice little group of blizz coming up now I started with a male blizz and two possible hets about 5 years ago and now have some female blizz finally out of them to breed to my male. Took forever but it was fun.

looks like elusive midnight blizzard to me...lol Some blizzards are born very very dark, almost black, they're known and midnight blizzards. Sadly they usually lighten with age. How old is she?...you may have been lucky enough to get one that stays pretty dark. I'd find as dark a male as you can to breed to her.

She is 34 grams right now. Thanks

Incredible dark blizzard--I also have never seen one that large, and that dark. She's definitely a keeper, nothing wrong there at all.
