CANT FINISH SHEDDING..............

03svtcobra Mar 25, 2004 09:02 PM

my snake started shedding and has gotten all the skin off her body except the skin on her head and her neck ( if you divide the snake, the top part of her body )

i didnt know what to do so i saoked her in warm water and she hasnt left her bowl in 2 days and the skin is still on her. will she get it off herself? or do i have to help her?

. Very carefully try to use your fingernail to get the shed staarted at the front of the nose or lower jaw. If this does not work do not try poking around the eyes. Sometimes it works if you soak them in a wet pillow case and they get the shed off rubbing against the pillow case.
Good Luck,
Jeff

I agree with Jeff's pillowcase idea. Whenever I have a snake that does not shed properly...I use the pillowcase method and I have had a 100% success rate thus far. Although I have never had to use it on my BRB.

explain this pillow case method... do i acually fill the pillow case with water or what?

help me out.

. All you have to do is put the snake in a wet pillowcase or cloth snake bag. This method is very effective. Like Linda says you probably have your cage humidity too low.

If your snake has been soaking already for a day or two then old skin should be loose and looking somewhat like a glove if it is ready to come off. I would that it out of the bowl so it will move across the substrate and pull off. If it doesn't come off in 24 hours I's use a wet paper towel or completely clean (with no fabric softener) hand towel to let her crawl though in your hands.

I would also consider your humidity level. It seems you posted not so long ago about her soaking for days. I don't know about anyone else's less than yearlings, but to this day mine shed in one piece every time and I have NEVER seen any of the 3 babies soak in their water. I sometimes wonder why I bother to even keep a water bowl in their enclosures since I have not any of the 3 ever even take one drink. My humidity is constantly high in these cages-there is ALWAYS condensation on at least 75% of the sides.

Anyway just some thoughts.
Linda

ok i'm gonna try the pillow case method and raise the tank humidity and let u guys know how it turns out

christopher_o Mar 26, 2004 09:28 PM

you may consider a different enclosure...screen top aquariums alow moisture to evaporate very quickly...something that is enclosed on all sides like a boaphile cage...or moonstruck exotics (good value) will help. if that isn't an option for you right now, you might try covering the screen top with a piece of plastic.

good luck, chris

i want to thank everyone that has givin me help on my situation. i took everybodys ideas into consideration.. i was going to do the pillow case method but before that i wanted to see if i can get some of it off myself. i took a moist paper towel and slowly went over her and eventually it all peeled off. it took a while b/c i went very slow and gentle b/c i didnt wanna hurt her.. but it paid off. she is free of all her dead skin and she looks more beautiful than ever.

again, thank you to everybody for helping me.
