Anoles anyone?

DeMak Mar 25, 2004 09:16 PM

OK, I'm bored off not raising SOMETHING! I still have rats in the freezer, the snakes are doing fine....

I grew up in Jacksonville FA and used to catch anoles. Would anoles be good feeders if they were captive bred and free of parasites? I know you can buy them real cheap in large quanities, so most people wouldn't bother to breed them, but they are probably full of parasites, so most people are reluctant to use them as feeders. I am looking around for a project and was considering this....

Well, my Solomon Island Boas sometimes take anoles, but prefer house geckos.....Which is the most popular feeder?

KINGSNAKES EAT LIZARDS SO DO SPITING COBRAS( NOT RECOMMEDED)

i think it would be a pain to do because unless you have lots of time you would have to make food for your anoles gutloaded then gutload the anoles.

When I thought about raising crickets so that I could raise anoles, gut loading, etc.... Nah.

Ain't gonna happen.

So, feed them primarily mealworms. Just keep the mealies on a good, nutritious substrate.

Yes...I think there would be a call for them, both as pets and feeders. I love the little guys, they're some of the most entertaining captives you can keep, frankly. I also love green vine snakes.
Other anole lovers may be horrified, but you could sell them frozen, too...same advantages as frozen mice. So long as you are raising your own, there aren't really any ethical concerns involved there...clean, healthy, frozen anoles in various sizes would be a godsend to folks breeding bloodred corns, vine snakes, and other species that tend to require lizards as a first meal, or that simply won't accept anything else.

One problem that I see is feeding the anoles. If you could get them over to a dry chow that would be fine but buying live foods for them would seem to be cost prohibitive.
