desperate doubt

surilover Mar 25, 2004 11:23 PM

I recently bought a 5 1/2 foot suriname redtail from a pet store. It had one of the most beautiful tails i had ever seen. she was going into a shed ( her eyes were grayish).she wasn't getting enough humidity. when I took her home she managed to get inside my sofa and coiled in the wood bars inside.
I couldn't uncoil her very gently cause I had to cut a small hole beneath it. when I took her out I noticed i had made a small scratch about one inch on the upper part of her tail. her tail is dark cherry red. the oval shape scratch was orange colour. I pull a little shed around it and the skin beneath was normal, but the scratch seen like if the smooth shiny "enamel" (the epidermis?) was torn out (in fact it was) cause the orange scales were dull and flat, though almost perfect. some scales around were half torn.
Is that "enamel" the epidermis? And if it is, will the skin regenerate and restore to its normal colour? Do I have to wait till the next shade? I really hope so.
I would appreciate your answer if you once had a problem like mine. thanks

One of my snakes had a wound on top of the head from rubbing against a screen. It took 3 sheds, but it completely healed. The scar got worse before it got better.

I'd advise putting Neosporin daily and with time it should heal completely, if it is not a very deep wound.

Good Luck.

I have noticed that when this skin is torn the skin that grows back is usually initially a greyish color in that region and then it tends to darken. I think it takes many sheds to start seeing a change back to color for that greyish scab color in the region.
