My ackies don't dig it

dave7739 Mar 26, 2004 02:11 AM

I can't understand why my ackies won't dig. They are about 1 year old(purchased in 07/03 @6weeks) They are growing, eating, shedding like normal. They just won't dig. I'm not sure if this is normal. My substrate is sand with a layer of sandy loam beneath, it was about 8 inches of plain sandy loam for about 6 mos. but they didn't dig in that either. I beleive my temps are adequate (135+ in the basking spot and about 80 degrees ambient temp.) I feed cricks and meal worms with the occasional roach (waiting to get my colony started)everything seems normal, but they just don't dig beyond the first layer of the plywood stack. They dig underneath that but don't dig any deeper. Should I be worried? BTW they are 3(I'd like to say trio, but I am unsure as to the sexes)at about 14 inches long with one of the trio about 10 inches long.
hanks in advace for any advice,
Dave

I tried some plain field dirt and some from a creek bank then some sand added and it worked he tunnels alot. I added a bit of cocopeat and he doesnt tunnel so Ill get some more real dirt this week to mix in.

each monitor is different. my argus and goulds love sandy loam, dig burrows all the time and the burrows sustain. i have my ackies on just plain dirt because that is what they seem to prefer. more than anything my ackies seem to just like tight places to crevice into.
