Common Snapper excape! Huh?...

MartinWhalin1 Mar 26, 2004 02:45 AM

I found my aquarium to be empty this morning. My snapper is only a yearling and at about 3" for carapace length. I am still perplexed as to how he got out. The only possibility is that he somehow climbed the in-tank filter, pushed up the lid enough to get out but not enough to knock off the light and fell to the floor. This is the last of my animals that I ever expected to be searching for an escapee. Any ideas on where he might go. How long can he survive out of the water? Weird.

look under all the couches, cabinets, fridge, and entertainment centers. When we let my RES out for his weekly stroll, those are his favorite places. Also look behind everything! You'd be surprised to find out where they can go...oh and up on shelves, they are pretty good climbers

Yeah, i had a couple kingsnake hatchlings die so he gets a piece now and then. Not his favorite but he'll eat it.

I still can't find him. i'm pretty sure the room he's in is escape proof but I thought that about the tank too.

My snapper escaped once. He was lost for at least 3 weeks before I found him. I finally found him in the bathroom. I think he went there because he sensed water was there. Just look behind everything and underneathe everything. Look in places you think he would not be. They always seem to be in the least expected places.
Good Luck,
Chris

About 2 years ago, one of my friends gave me his hatchling Common Snapper, so I kept it. It was kept in a rubbermaid container about 6 inches high with no rocks, a lamp overhead somewhat heated the water. It would eat anything, seriously, anything I don't even think I could name all the things that I fed it. Well, about almost a year after I got it, it escaped. I walked up into my room and the container was the first thing I would see, as I needed to reach my hand over it to turn on the light. Well, the turtle wasn't there. This turtle was only a yearling yet it was about 6 inches head to tail, well after searching for about half an hour, I found it right where it dropped off of the dresser, lol, when I grabbed it; it dug it's claws into the carpet, it was such an SOB to get it out. But I did get it finally, but after his little stunt as Houdini, we decided it was time to let him go since I did not have any room at all for another 10 gallon tank.

I think it could probably survive maybe a week out of water, I'm not exactly sure, it somewhat depends on temps. in your house. I'm pretty sure you'll find it before the week is up though. Good luck.
