Turtle Growth

deejay17 Mar 26, 2004 09:02 AM

I have had my Oregano for 9 months. When I got him he was 1.5 inches. Now he is 2.75 inches. Is he growing too fast? Actually I think he is a she, so is she growing too fast? Thanks and God Bless.

Yes, that is too fast. If this is the same turtle with the long claws, then you have a male.

This turtle is 2.75 inches big but doesnt have long claws. I was afraid that Oregano was growing to fast. I dont know what I am suppose to do. I feed Oregano every other day with reptomin sticks (5) and a little bit of bloodworms (3-4 freeze dried) or baby shrimp (3-4 sun dried). It is either/or bloodworms or baby shrimp never both in a feeding. Oregano has plants in the tank at all times and there are guppies swimming around (not a very good hunter, because i have like 15 baby guppies and 4 adults). I have a basking heat lamp and a uvb lamp I think 20 watts. What am I doing wrong? Thanks and God Bless

The reptomin is fine, but the blood worms and shrimp should only be occasional treats. She should be eating more veggies and greens.

ok, so should I feed the reptomin every two days and green and veggies everyday or retomin every other day with greens and veggies everyday? Thank you so much for the help. God Bless

You could go to every two days, mine get reptomin maybe twice a week or so. They get various veggies and greens daily, generally whatever I have layin around. Lately they have been getting a lot of strawberry caps, since I have been on a strawberry kick. (I am 6 months pregnant)

Baby will come out with red hair with all those strawberries. Good luck and God Bless.

Actually -- that isn't too awful a growth rate. 1.25 inches in 9 months IS a bit fast but considering approximately an inch a year is good normal growth this isn't too far off base. I agreed if you cut back on that animals protein I am sure things will balance out.

I have seen much worse. I took in two rescues several months ago. The biggest cleanest healthiest turtles sliders I have ever gotten in for rehoming. The shells where a wee bit lumpy not really bad at all when you consider each of them were 8 inches SCL and only 2 years old!! When I got this news on the phone I thought I would see to terribly deformed turtles with flab hanging out of their shell -- really not the case. Beautiful well kept animals -- just overfed.
