Baby Turtle Claws

deejay17 Mar 26, 2004 09:04 AM

My new baby turtle (no name yet) has really long claws. Is this natural? I thought they didnt really grow all the much till over a year old. Should I watch it to make sure it doesn't scratch itself? Or do I not worry about it? Thanks and God Bless

It is normal for males to have long claws. They won't scratch themselves.

This baby turtle is only about 1.25 inches big, but has long claws. I didnt think this small of a turtle would have long claws yet? Thanks and God Bless

What is the history of this turtle before you got it? Do you know how old it is or anything about the way it's previous owner kept it? Are the nails long like the ones that dsgngrl posted in her response? Can you post a picture?

Can I stop asking you a ton of questions and give you second to answer one? LOL!!

Sorry didn't mean to rattle on. I was just wondering if possibly you could have a seriously stunted little turtle on your hands and not a baby at all.

It seems so unlikely given that you say it is a small as it is though.

I got the turtle from a friend who had it for a couple of weeks. She didnt want it because she didnt want to put out the money it took to take care of it. She bought it at a petstore. It is a few months old. I would take a picture but when I get close to it it jumps into the water and when I pick it up it sucks it's whole body in it's shell.
