bigdee Mar 26, 2004 09:16 AM

im planning on using these and want to see what experiences people has had with them. I would love to see pics if you have some, right now im trying to figure the heating with heat tape one idea was to put some wood around it and run heat tape down the back.

they aren't very good for herp keeping. They are hard to heat, have little ventilation, and some may be made with toxinous plastic.

I’ve used and still used the plastic racks, without any problems. I’m sure there are others on this forum who do also, but there is no telling if they will speak up. Heating can be an issue; it’s more difficult to maintain temperatures when compared to a glass tank or rack system.

My current Rubbermaid rack is heated using ‘black light’ style incandescent bulbs that are attached to dimmers. Each tub has at least one 4x4 piece of tile near the heat source, they seem to enjoy basking on them when the temperatures are cool.

One thing you need to be very cautious of is opening and closing the containers. It is very possible for a gecko to climb ½ way out when you are tending to the upstairs tenant. I read recently of a gecko who got pinched when closing a drawer and the leo lost it’s tail. As long as you are aware of the risk, and very cautious to avoid this situation, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions, posts tend to get buried fast on this forum
