Why won't he breed?

Heather Mar 26, 2004 09:40 AM

Ok, For the past month or so I've been putting my females (one at a time) in with my male. Well, He sees them, runs to them, Grabs their nape, The females freeze and then... He lets go and starts bobbing! What's the deal? Temps are good. He lives in a 6 foot long and 2 foot deep cage. Fed a great diet. Measured and weighed every month. On the 1st of march he was 415.5 grams and 18 1/4 inches at 11 months old. And he's getting fatter. So what's the deal? Why won't he breed? Females are actting right but He's not breeding? Is he too young? Has he not figured it out? What's up?

I think your problem is the age. While he is big enough to breed he is only 11 months old. Compare that to a 12 year old boy. He can probably get the job done but he doesn't really know what to do because of inexperience. It will take a while for him to figure things out. Once he does then look out. Try placing them both in a neutral environment like the floor. The other thing that could cause this is your female may not be ready and this makes things tougher for him.

Sidenote: Male dragons breeding at 11 months is okay.

Boys breeding at 12 years not okay!

It was just an example.

larger dragons. They may look adult but are still to young. IMO is it more than weight, length, age or morph. It's a combination of all of them.

We have one male that even in his second season was not ready, he's a hypo GG with irridescent scales like an opal, but omg, this year he certainly is!

He's not a GG or anything like that. He's a Red Sandfire/ Red Sand Desert X Hypo/Snow. Thanks so much for the info you guys! He's just not mature enough in his mind I guess! LOL Still a little boy. I was thinking something may have been wrong but guess It's just him. LOL Thanks!

Do you still have the other male that is listed in your signature? If so, you can try letting them see each other when putting the male in with the females.

It's worth a try. I just want to stress that I don't mean to put them together. just let the male you put in with the females see one of the other males.

I understood what you meant about not putting the boys together. I'll give that a shot. Thanks so much!
