Albino Fat-Tail not eating question???

bblack Mar 26, 2004 09:54 AM

I have aquired a pair of amel .African Fat-tail geckos, these are young sexable animals..I got them about a month or so ago...I had them in the same cage with the proper Temps..they were doing good..I then decided to seperate them,,and the female has started to go down hill..losing weight in her tail not eating..I bought some Parazap..just in case it was parasites..but since they are cb..I didn't think this would be the case..well I used the Parazap for a week and she still shows no signs of wanting to eat crickets..I have now started feeding her with an dropper..a mix of Banana Baby food/meat baby food/calcium,newborn kitten formula (KRM)..
She is taking the mixture, but my question is has anyone else had this exp. with cb fat-tail geckos..where they just start going down hill..I know it is common for Wild caughts..
Any tips or advice would be great...
Thanks for your help,
Bill
p.S The male has no problems.

When I first got my cb male AFT about 4 years ago he did not eat for the first month. And he stopped eating for awhile when I changed his substrate.Make sure to leave some crickets in with your female over night.

How much did you get your amel.pair for?
I have 2.0.0 AFT and want to get a few nice looking girls for the two.

I have both fat-tails on Calci Sand..prior to that they were on paper towls..They were expensive $1000 for the pair..

Thanks,
Bill

I would switch to a peat/sand(75/25%) mixture or something like jungle earth for a substrate on AFT's. They require a higher humidity and sand is not a good substate to hold humidity. AFTs will stress very easily to almost anything.

I do have a humidity chamber in with each of them..I was thinking about using Bed A Beast..but it seems like it would be hard for them to locate crickets and possiable to ingest substrate..

not an expert on AFT's but the female might be impacted from ingesting the Calci-Sand.

You will have a greater chance of impaction with calci sand. It doesnt pack with constant misting and the calcium added in can induce your gecko to lick it when looking for calcium. Yes there is a risk with any substrate besides paper towels but with the humidity requirments many take it with AFTs. I've found the peat with a little sands packs into a nice surface with no large chunks to digest or crix to hide. I wouldnt use it if I didnt know many good breeders use something very simular for AFT's. Hatclings I keep on paper towels till old/large enough for real substrate.

Nice looking Albino!!!
I think I will change my substrate to a mix of sand/peat..but the calci-sand did not cause the problem with the female, I forgot to mention she was not eating while still on paper Towls..I have just recently moved her to the Calci sand..
I had separated her from the male and put her in a 10 gallon with paper towl..she is now in a 20 Gallon Long..because i could not fit the humidity box in the 10 g..tank
