Anyone have experiance with folical stasis?(sp) long post ,please read

totallygecko Mar 26, 2004 10:34 AM

Hello,
At the end of january I introduced my male to my females. All of them have been laying eggs ever since except for one of my breeders from last year. She was showing signs of being gravid, swollen abdomen, but I couldnt see any eggs. So I seperated her and put her in her own enclosure to see if she would lay.Well she has not. 2 weeks ago I took her to the vet and he said not to worry until she stops eating. So now she hasnt been eating for like 4 days, I called the vet and he said dont worry they can go a couple weeks without eating. That was not my concern , my concern was is she eggbound?

So I took her to another vet yesterday and she took an x-ray to see if it in fact is eggs. It is not.Doesnt show up as an impaction either. So she took a sample from her belly to see whats in there. She hasnt seen what came out of her belly before. It contained some blood, alot of fat cells, and a white paste. So I still did not know what was a matter with her.She said she would call my vet and speak to him and see if he has seen this before and also call another reptile specialist and see if he had any idea.

Well I just got a phone call, they all believe she has folical stasis, eggs that never shelled. It seems she has alot of them.so the only option is surgery and they will have to take out her ovaries.

So has anyone had any experiance with this? What was the turn out? Did she make it thru the surgery?Does anyone have an idea how much surgery runs for leos?An estimate? And does anyone know what might have caused this? She has not lost any weight, she gets plenty of calcium. Thanks for any ideas and comments! tanya

Hi Tanya,

I have had a female with this problem, and it did wind up requiring surgery. Fortunately, my vet is an exotics surgeon as well, and was able to save her reproductive organs and she has since then laid successfully. I think the surgery was around $250.00 or so.

Here is a really good article on lizard reproduction, although it is concering iguanas, it applicable to most lizards:

It was explained in the original post... It's when an egg forms without a shell and ends up remaining in the abdomen.

Well, a follicle is where an egg forms from the ovary, and stasis means "at a stand-still" or not progressing.

When a follicle starts forming on the ovary, it usually produces an ovum which then becomes fertilized by the male's sperm and develops into an egg. Occasionally, an ovum develops into an infertile egg, and is passed through the oviducts the same way. In both cases, the egg forms a protective calcium shell around the egg for protection of the contents. In most instances, if the ovum is not fertilized, it will start to dissolve and is reabsorbed into the body.

On rare occasions, this reabsorption does not occur, and since the ovum is not a 'real' egg with a shell it becomes filled with fatty substances, blood, and yolk, which begins to degrade and can become like a pustule or cyst. If left untreated, it can become septic... and this could cause blood poisoning. It also can leak and leach out into the abdominal cavity and cause peritonitis. Both of these conditions can be fatal.

If you're talking about me I don't know why the heck you are attacking me...I was just saying that it was in the original post and then explaining it again...I just didn't go into as much depth as marcia...I don't know why you've decided that I'm a terrible person and need to personally attack me... I don't see what I've done to deserve it.

This exact thing happened to me last year. Fred, my Leo laid 2 eggs and then nothing. Very successful year previously and then this happens, and this year she wants nothing to do with mating. its like she knows it will happen again. biggest leo fight ive seen because she wanted nothing to do with it.

She had no surgery. She never ate for a long time after that, i thought she was gone for sure but she is fatter then she was before this happened and back to her same old self, she just doesnt like male leos around her anymore, she gets as high as she possibly can, almost like she is another male....

Here is another pic...
