Wild Caught Northern Banded Water Snakes

JDouglas Jun 12, 2003 01:50 PM

My friends and I caught fifteen water snakes in couple hours at [removed location] in Central Iowa. Here are a couple pics of the more colorful animals. This adult has a lot of red and if it were cleaner or freshly shed it would be even better.

This one was much lighter in ground color than any of the other 14 we caught, but it lacked the nice reds that others had. All snakes were let go and were not harmed.

To think a lot of people consider N. sipedon to be ugly. That is a beauty.

Brett,
I would hate for someone to go out and collect these animals and remove them from nature so I am no at liberty to say where it is or what county. I am not saying you would do this but I have already received emails from fellow herpers who are concerned that this may happen if specific locations are posted. I regret already giving too much info on location.

Sorry,

Jaremy Douglas

No problem, I completely understand. I don't want anyone field collecting in Iowa either with so many captive born available.

Glad to hear there are folks here concerned about herps in Iowa! If you do find herps in Iowa it would be great to send us an email: Check the Iowa Herp Web Site at: www.herpnet.net

Your locations will be checked against existing county records. Even if its not a new locality for a given species, its always to good to know what species are being found and where. There are also a number of rarer species that are not regularly recorded from the state: green snakes, lines snakes, etc.
