Floating Dwarf African Frog

amychristopher Mar 26, 2004 03:06 PM

I am new to this aquarium stuff. We have had a 10 gallon aquarium for about a month. I have one african dwarf frog and he has been floating on the top of the water for two days now. I took a water sample into the fish shop and had a really high ammonia level. I found out we have too many fish in the tank along with the one frog. I took the frog out and put in a separate tank on conditioned water. That was about 24 hours ago. He is still floating, but alive and swims a little when I touch him. I read something about a salt water bath 20 minutes once a day to help get rid of the toxins. Can I do anything else to help him make it. I know, now, that he needs his own tank. I bought him at WalMart and he was in amongst a bunch of fish, so I thought it would be all right. Any suggestions on how to make my frog healthy again? I have been feeding him blood worms by netting him and putting him in a little cup to eat because the other fish ate all the worms while they were still floating on top.

This happened to one of my frogs. I bought him and then a day later he started floating and then he died. When you buy a frog from the store make sure they are swimming around alot and put up a good fight to get away from the net. I have a frog with 5 glodfish and they all get along fine, you might have just bought a sick frog

How is your frog. I hope you didn't do that salt bath you were talking about. I don't think the frog would be able to survive that.

Yes, you are right, the frogs should have their own tank. It's very difficult for them to get their food since they are pretty much blind. If they are in with other fish you really should be hand feeding them with a turkey baster or a pipette from a test kit.
