Hermanns Tortoise

gpoop Mar 26, 2004 08:22 PM

Hi, I'm thinking about getting a hermanns tortoise and I have a few questions. First can a baby live in a 29 gallon reptile tank for a few months to a year? Do they need to hibernate? How often do you need to add a vitamin/mineral supplement to their food? Thanks.

You can make the 29 gal tank work if you have it but a 20 gal long would be better if you want to use a glass tank. The 29 gal tank has the same footprint as a 15 gal which would still be better than the 29 gal because it is shorter in height.
Hermans do not 'need' to hibernate unless the temperatures you keep them at are not high enough to maintain their metabolism.
Vitamin supplements are not needed if you feed a varied diet but you can add a small amount (a pinch) a week to cover your... bases.

I have two baby Hermans.....I think your tank would probably be okay temporarily but they need lots of space to run around in so I wouldn't keep him in it for too long. Make sure you cover the sides of the glass...if they can see out they will be constantly pushing against the glass to try and get out. I spinkle a little bit of reptocal and reptivite on there food twice a day. Also make sure there is a shallow bowl of water in the pen at all times. . They can easily climb in and out without tipping over onto there backs. And of course the UV and heat lite on one side of the tank....keeping the other side of the tank cooler. Good luck!!! They are fun little guys.
