Tail Problem Please HELP!!!

thammond Mar 26, 2004 08:30 PM

My iguana is about 1 1/2 ft. I noticed that the bottom of his tail to about three inches up was turning dark. I figured that he was fixing to shed that part then I took a closer look and seen that the 3 in. part at the end was dead. What could of caused this problem and how will he rid of the dead tail?
Thanks
Trent

He needs to be seen by an exotic animal vet ASAP!!! If the tail is infact dead it needs to be amputated to prevent the gangrene from spreading throughout the tail and into his body! This is serious and needs to be dealt with as quickly as possible. My ig andy has lost about 4 inches of his tail in all because of him "swatting" everything and it dying. My vet amputated the dead part plus abotu 1/2 inch up from the sick/dead part of the tail to give the healthy part of the tail time to heal and a good start at re-growth. Good Luck

The vet said that it was gangrene and was probably caused by hitting his tail on the cage. He amputated an inch 1/2 from the dead part. He said he had a prob. with the tail bleeding but the bleeding stopped and he is doing great now. He acts alot more lively. At first he seemed a little off balance but I could imagine losing half a leg or so.
Thanks soooo much for you help.
