handling

uromagnus Mar 26, 2004 08:30 PM

maybe some of u can give me some pointers.

i have had my uro for 2 1/2 weeks now and i am still bonding with him. he really seems to like that i pet him and he puts his head up to me when i put my hand by him (he also eats outta my hand).

can uro's be trained to sit on the shoulder ? (i have not ried yet since i have not even mastered walking around holding him). this little guy can be very active (when he is awake) and i am worried of him jumping off and getting hurt. do any of u use a harness ? i am considering starting with him in my lap (without a grasp on him) just so he can get used to me.

today for the second time he ran up my arm to my shoulder when i offered my hand to the branch he was sitting on. at first he came over and sat in my hand. then he ran up my arm -fast. sometimes he wants to run all over me and can be hard to get a hold of when he does. other times he will just hang with me but i keep a good grasp on him anyway.

and finally... how long can they be away from the basking light and heat of the tank ?

From what I've heard, Uro's chill out as they get older. The young ones are full of energy, as mine also has a tendancy to run up my arm at full speed.

When I first took mine out of his enclosure, I sat him on my lap, all the while keeping a hand very close so he couldn't jump off.

You may want to keep him out for a few minutes at a time. He'll (hopefully) get used to you and may calm down a bit. As long as it isn't like an icebox in your home, I would worry more about the stress of being away from 'home' then being away from the basking lamp.

i agree,
most uros are very very psycotic when younger but tame done quite wel as adults.

mine seems to calm after having him out for a few minutes...so that might work with yours too.

i don't like the harnesses. even the safe ones have caused problems for me, i choose not to use them mainly cuz they don't like them.

if you want to hear what happened with them just ask and i'll post it....i'm just in a hurry today.

what type of uro is yours? how old?

Just wanted to say a couple things, its good you are hand feeding, that does help in taming and getting them used to you !

But I would advise against, your question of training him to sit on your shoulder. To dangerous !

First he is small and they can move quick when they want, you would not want him to fall and get hurt, break a leg or whatever.

And when they are older they get heavier and bulky, and seem to like being supported while being held. They are not the kind of lizard to ride on your shoulder.

If you are sitting, they can climb on you, mine does all the time. But I would never leave them perched on me and walk around they would either slide off or fall off !

Just keep picking him up and letting him climb on you, while you sitting on the floor or whatever.

He will get tame, just be patient, everything is new to him right now. Sounds like your doing well, with him already !

thanks for the info ! a breeder told me he looked to be just under 1 yr going by size (of his batch) but a poster on here said 2+ yrs old. he is 8" long, WC and was here for 6 months so is used to people. i will not attempt to shoulder train him as i had a feeling this was not that kind of lizard. he actually is mad at me since he ran up my arm the other day ! he has hissed at me and i'd swear he gives me 'dirty looks'. he still lets me pet him and hand feed him but i am not picking him up right now.
would like to hear the harness info also !
