need boa cage advice, asap...

Alyssa84 Mar 26, 2004 09:54 PM

I recently purchased a new cage for my Hogg island boa, only to discover upon its arrival that it had been finished/stained/sealed with something that gives off a rather noxious odor... I had to put it in my basement because I can't stand the smell, and therefore I highly doubt my snake would.

So, if that one ever stops reeking, I may be able to use it... in the meantime, I'm short one boa cage... poor baby is currently in a spare aquarium, which is large enough for the time being, but won't keep her happy for long.

I've looked at a lot of the well known models... Vision, Moonstruck, Boaphile, etc... can anyone offer advice as to the best setup to go with? (Obviously, at this point I'm looking for something that is NOT wood...) Custom building really isn't an option for me, as neither myself nor anyone I know has any sort of skill with that.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated... I wasn't expecting to have my perfect cage to turn out to be useless

Get it somewhere where it can air out- that may remove the noxious odor. Sealants and stains can take a while to fully cure.
I know when I first got my Boaphile cage out of the box it had a strong odor from the plastic and sealing the heat tape in that took a couple days to disperse with open windows. I waited until there was no discernable smell and then rinsed it well and added the snake with no problems. I do really like the new black hardware on the cage, the fact that it holds humidity well and the installed heat option has worked great. I've opted to try Moonstruck for my next few cages, for comparison (hopefully they'll arrive next week) and I'll give a full report on the caging forum.

I agree with the previous poster - don't give up on the cage. Find out what product was used the seal the cage and start a new thread on this forum. Some oil-based products and epoxies can take weeks if not months to offgas completely.
