whats the best way to disinfect?

lizzylizard Mar 26, 2004 11:11 PM

Is bleach ok to use, if thoroughly rinsed after? Also I have one of those magnetic reptile caves that you can open from the outer side of the aquarium. It is such a pain because it takes water in when washing and then the water won’t come out. It took weeks to evaporate the water fully and now gives off a funky feet smell, has anyone eles had problems with these?

I would use bleach and or ammonia (ammonia is the only thing that kills crypto)...and make sure to rinse VERY VERY well.

If that works there is a picture of one. It opens and has a magnet on one side, metal on the other. It is easily removed. My old leo really liked it, I couldn't get him out.

What is crypto?

StinaUIUC Mar 26, 2004 11:33 PM

well i don't know about the hide...lol anyway, crypto (cryptosporidium) is a protozoan parasite that is uncurable and deadly to leos. It's not too common...

My old leo passed about a month ago. I have no idea what really caused it. If it was this crypto could the bacteria live in the enclosure for two months? even after being bleached?

StinaUIUC Mar 26, 2004 11:53 PM

it definitely could...but of course only if that's what killed him. What exactly happened before he died?...what where his symptoms?

There were so many. Maybe you remember, his name was Rex, I probably posted about a hundred posts. Thinking about it now, as terrible as it is to think, I believe the vet killed him. Here I'll explain.

Rex pretty much stopped eating (he ate maybe 2-3 mealworms in the three month before he died. I took him to the vet after two of those months (I waited so long in the hopes it was just due to winter). The vet said he had MBD, told me to take out all of his hides, put a UV light on him 24/7 and force feed him a liquid calcium/vit D that he gave me.

Before I saw the vet REX looked fine (fat tail etc.). In the week following the vet he lost probably half the fluid in his tail. He also became unable to eat anything. Meaning that when I gave him the calcium stuff he frantically ran around with his mouth open gagging. It looked like (thinking back) that this stuff was stinging his insides.

We went back to the vet, who by the way refused to do a fecal. The vet said to keep doing what I was doing and that Rex just didn't like the taste.

So anyways to make a long story short. Two weeks after the first vet visit I stoped giving him the stuff (I had allready put back his hides and only had the UV on during the day), it was too painful to watch. The next day I tried to give him some water, just a little on his lips and that is how he died. Something had affected him so much that he was unable to drink water without being in sever pain and convulsing .

lizzylizard Mar 27, 2004 12:09 AM

I think the solution from the vet may have been to strong or something. Causing some sort of a reaction or infection.

lizzylizard Mar 27, 2004 12:14 AM

So far, looking at all the web sites, (I've read everthing on Dr. Gecko) I have yet to find anything that would explain why he was unable to take in water at the end.

StinaUIUC Mar 27, 2004 12:18 AM

Well...that doesn't really sound like crypto....was there vitamin D3 in the solution he gave you?...he may have overdosed him on that. I'd wash with ammonia just to be safe...a bottle at the grocery store costs about a buck. Don't feel bad about Rex...you did all you could to save him!

I'm 80% sure there was vitamin D, I didn't hear anythin about D3. Do you have any suggestions about the post I posted just above this one. I'm really stumped about how to fill cracks in the slate I just got.

StinaUIUC Mar 27, 2004 12:29 AM

if there was vitamin D it was probably D3...my guess is he gave her too much and wasn't going to tell you that b/c you'd probably be able to sue him if that's what happened

I wish there was something I could do to get the word out that he is not a herp vet (not a good one at least). Maybe he's good with cats and dogs but I would never see him again.

StinaUIUC Mar 27, 2004 12:49 AM

I think I'd avoid him too after an experience like that...

you had better rinse every single little bleach bubble, adn make sure u get all of it. or you could do what i do, and use an estamted mix of 5 percent bleach, and the rest water and make sure u get it all, its a lil bit safer.

oh ...you knew I said mine wrong...lol I meant to say a solution of bleach and/or ammonia. I agree with the bleach part...if you use ammonia you can use a half cup of ammonia to a gallon of water. You just really do need to make sure you rinse REALLY REALLY well!!
