New Cal.King Owner needs help.

LeoGeoKing Mar 26, 2004 11:23 PM

I recently acquired a male cal. king. He is 2 foot long, and said to be just out of hibernation. The family I acquired him from said they never wanted a snake and this was a boyfriends pet. The girl I got this from gave me the snakes cage witch is a 30 gallon reptile enclosure with a looking lid. She had him housed on Ecco earth "coconut fibers," I got him yesterday cleaned the cage and put the left over bag of Ecco earth in with him. He has an undertank heater, hide spot on the warm side, large climbing branch, water dish and decorative rock to aid in shedding. I bought him 2 pinkies yesterday," He had no trouble eating right away." Today I checked on him and I noticed he has pieces of skin flaking off, not like a normal shed at all. Is this from lack of humidity or could it be something else? Let me know if I have sufficient housing and any help on the shed problem will be appreciated.

The shed problem is probably from a lack of humidity. I'd put it in a damp pillowcase for an hour or two and see what that does. You could also try soaking him in SHALLOW 75-80F water. Besides that you could mist the enclosure but with that coconut stuff it's going to stay wet for a long time. I'd switch to lightly misted aspen until the shed comes off. Aspen dries out pretty quick. After the shed just let the aspen dry out or you could switch to newspaper. Also, two pinkies sounds like an awfully small meal. I generally feed something that will leave a lump. Not a big lump, just something you can see. But what do I know, I'm still in diapers.
