problem with roaches................don't tell the wife.....long

herpluver Mar 27, 2004 04:00 AM

well last week i split up my roach colony in to 3 tanks, 1 glass tank ( tight lid) and 2 rubber made containers ( not so tight lids) all 3 have a 3 inch strip of vasoline but tonight i noticed 2 baby roaches on the floor, i thought maybe i knocked them off then i was pulling out feeders. then when i was putting carrots in the tanks a baby showed me his secret......those littel buggers can walk across the vasoline with no problem. so what do i do? is bug stop better? should i go back to a glass tank? i'm not so much worried about having roaches in the house, because its pretty cold, i'm more worried about losing all my babys because i just had a baby boom and have about 500 babys between the 2 rubbermaids. also don't want to incurage spiders to come into the house.

May I ask what species of roach you are talking about? I have noticed that occasionally my lobster roaches are able to walk on the vaseline, usually though this is when it is first applied or not warm enough to be "slippery" so to say. I use a lid on all the bins (plus the vaseline) and I have not seen any loose in the house. Could it be possible that the babies you saw "escaped" when you were switching bins?

Whether bug stop is better I dont know? I have heard it is less messy The reason I ask what species is because if you look on allpet roaches site they say that vaseline only works with minimal success with some of the glass climbers. Maybe you have one of those species?

You have to use at LEAST 2 inches of vaseline in a band, and you have to check it every couple of weeks to make sure it's still slick...it will loose some of that over time as well.
