question about age/size/food

BabyStoleMyDingo Mar 27, 2004 06:18 AM

Hello

My beardie is close to 9 1/2 inches long. I was told by one pet store worker he was 6-7 months old, another said he was 9 months old.

Well I've looked online and he seems small for either of those ages.

He was with other beardies, so I'm thinking that had alot to do with it. And could it be possible he didn't get enough protein? I was told they only gave them crix once a week. Could that slow down the rate they grow?

And is it possible to over feed them on crix? He seems to just want to eat them and no veggies or soaked pellets.

I've only had him 2 days and he's already taking food from my hand

Oh..is he big enough for playsand? Many websites say different ages, so Im a tad bit confused. As of right now he is on paper towels.

My dragon is 10 inches at 3 months old. So your's is either a lot younger than they say, or his growth has been stunted by poor husbandry.

Crix once a week is WRONG. I don't know about over feeding, but you should let him eat as much as he wants in a 10 minute period, twice a day.... at least until he gets a lot bigger.

If you want him to eat his veggies too, try giving them to him in the morning and not offering crickets until about noon. If he's hungry enough he'll go for it. I had to stick a little leafy greeen under my babies nose the first time to show him what it was, now he'll go to the dish on his own. If your guy is eating from your hand you shouldn't have any problem with this.

I would wait on the playsand until he's bigger, especially since he might have other health problems you don't want to complicate. Most people wait until they're adults, and since you don't know how old yours is, it's a good idea to wait.

That's my advice.

Yeah, I thought he was awfully small for the ages they told me.

Do you think he will be ok? I just called the pet store asked if she knows an exact hatch date, she said "No, but I can tell you they are under a year old"

I said "because I was told that for his size he should be much bigger"

She was all "No, they're growing right, whent they first came in they were the size of my pinky"

I said well can you call the breeder and find out the exact date for me? (was told b4 they get them locally from a breeder)

She said she would try and to give a call back tomorrow.

sighhhh
