Is being green mean they are warm enough?

leopfan Mar 27, 2004 09:13 AM

I have a green anole and she was bright green yesterday and would go brown while she slept lastnight. Today now she is basking and is mostly brown. She ate real well, lastnight and I misted her cage this AM. She is on papertowel substrate. She has two plants in cage for hide and climb with a basking spot above everything. Her basking spot is at 95 but its in the shape of a Y. She is hanging out on the cooler side of the basking spot but shes staying pretty brown. Should I be concerned?

Thanks

I think if a carolinensis is never or rarely green then you should be concerned. Happy anoles will be green most of the time. Color is a function of body temperature, humidity, mood etc...There are factors other then thermoregulation that affect color.

Get some proper light on the anole if you haven't already. Correct UVB light is important as is humidity.

What you want is a Spot bulb I think like the PowerSun UV Mercury Vapor Bulb. Here is something to keep in mind though and this is important. The spot focus bulbs have twice the UV at twice the distance but only within a spot area and no UV or UVB elsewhere. The one I mention above is made by the same people that make the repitsun bulbs. (the reptisun 5.0 bulb is what I recommend getting, but it is florecent)

Go here for a comparison (I have no idea if these readings are correct or not I only assume they are. It is just the first comparison page I found)

Actually, unless you have a VERY large enclosure (like more than 55 gallons), I would NOT recommend a mercury vapor bulb. They are designed for large enclosures. If you have bearded dragons, iguanas, tortoises, or uromastyx, then they are fantastic.

If you have a smaller sized enclosure (30 gallons, etc), you could try the ESU super coil. I haven't used it, but hear it does ok in UVB production. It's like a fluorescent coil bulb that goes in an incandescent socket.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for pointing that out I did not realize they were for such large enclosures.

My anoles are almost always brown, and there's nothing i can do about it.

Eveything is fine. They have proper EVERYTHING. I'm not going to sit here and type out everything they get, just put it this way, if you asked me if I'm doing such and such correctly, the answer is yes. They just don't stay green. I noticed that when they notice me watching them when they ARE green, then that's it, they start slowly going back to brown over a few minute's time.

In the pet store where everything was wrong he was BRILLIANT green. Get him home and next day hes tan to brown. Went to bed and fed him, turned off lights. He lays under a leaf and is bright green,...at night.

You know what I wonder If he had a green perch.....ponder

Thanks
